Every year there are 30-50 professional minor league baseball players that come to Rancho Cucamonga to play baseball and entertain thousands of local baseball fans. What many fans don’t realize is that most of these Quakes players are paid a very minimal salary which does not even cover the basic necessities of life here in Southern California. Our Booster Club is always looking for homes and families who are willing to offer a place for players to live.
A “host family” provides housing for one or more players during the season. It's a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to assist an up-and-coming baseball player as he develops his skills and works to earn his place in the Major Leagues.
The players arrive in Rancho Cucamonga the first week of April, and the regular season runs through Labor Day weekend (with the playoffs going another couple of weeks into September). Some players will stay all season while some may be moved up or down among the other Dodger affiliate levels. New players arrive all season long so new host families are always needed.
It is our hope that “host families” will be able to provide the Quakes player with his own room (or a shared room with another player), a private bathroom (if possible) and laundry facilities. Some host families provide meals though that is optional. These young men have long schedules with late night games so a quiet morning environment is important.
While some of the players may have their own vehicles, many do not. Some “host families” provide a car for them to use but that is optional and a decision that is strictly that of the “host family”. Some “host families” are able to provide transportation to and from the stadium. We try to match players with other players who have cars so that transportation will not be an issue.
It’s great when a player feels like they are part of your family rather than just a guest in your home. But we do need to remember that they are here with one objective in mind – to excel in playing baseball enough to make it to the Major Leagues. We will do our best to match up players that meet your criteria as per your answers to our Housing Questionnaire.
It is important that you let your player(s) know your House Rules (wash your dishes, pick up after yourself, etc). If while housing a player you have any concerns or comments during the course of the season, please do not hesitate to contact the Booster Club immediately.
If you are interested in becoming a “host family” for a Rancho Cucamonga Quakes baseball player, you can download our questionnaire and mail it to our P.O. Box or email us with your questions.
